What is Work Integrated Learning?

Work Integrated Learning is a purposeful, organised, supervised and assessed educational activity that integrates theoretical learning with its applications in the workplace.  It provides students with real-life practice that influences their professional development and attitudes.

Work Integrated Learning can occur:

  • as work practice through placement in an industry, professional or community organisation workplace (e.g. a professional placement experience, field placement, practicum or internship);
  • as work practice through placement in a simulated workplace practice setting on or off campus; or
  • through an assessment activity designed to simulate an authentic workplace activity.

Why Evaluate Work Integrated Learning?

The increasing significance of the nature and quality of student professional learning experiences is highlighted in the Australian Higher Education Standards Framework (HESF).  Higher education providers must have effective arrangements to assure the quality of student work placements, practicum and other forms of Work Integrated Learning in the course of study.

Along with providing evidence of quality assurance of Work Integrated Learning, student feedback related to their professional learning experiences should also be used to enhance and improve the experience for future students.
